On 16 December 1907, sixteen of the newest battleships of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet began their voyage around the world. This cruise, which covered
more than 45,000 miles and made twenty port calls on six continents, would later become known as the cruise of the Great White Fleet.The fourteen-month
long voyage lasted until February 22, 1909 and was commanded by Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans until the fleet arrived in San
Francisco when Rear Admiral Charles S. Sperry assumed command.
